A "factory-built chimney" is one that is manufactured in a factory and assembled at the home site. They are not of solid construction like masonry chimneys and contain airspace between the flue and the exterior walls of the chimney. Factory built chimneys are basically kits that are assembled, rather than constructed from scratch, at the home site.
Chimneys are exposed to the outside elements and require maintenance or repairs to prevent deterioration. Moisture absorption, decayed mortar joints, and cement crowns, flaking brick or inadequate footings are all issues that contribute to a faulty chimney. In many cases, these repairs are minimal in cost if addressed in time.
Whenever you use your fireplace or stove, your chimney is working to keep harmful substances that result from burning fuel - gases, smoke, particles, minerals and more - safely contained and then removed. But over time, debris and creosote (the residue that results from those byproducts moving up your chimney) builds up and can lead to blockages and fires.
